Happy Tuesday y’all!
Yes! Another blog post. And about my favorite topic of course, books.
It’s high time I give you a reading update. As always, you can follow me on Goodreads or my Reading Instagram Account too.
And as always, please share what YOU’VE been reading in the comments. I love having my very own virtual book club here, you guys rock.
Like a River from Its Course by Kelli Stuart // Full disclosure. Kelli is a Baylor classmate/ sorority sister of mine. That does not change the fact that her book BLEW ME AWAY. It’s not an easy subject matter. It’s about what Hitler did to the people of Ukraine during WW2. It made me sob. This book broke my heart and I can’t stop thinking about it. It was so all encompassing, I just couldn’t put it down. Easily one of my favorite historical fiction novels of all time. Kelli really did her research and you can tell the book is a labor of love. I fell in love with each character for different reasons and I have thought about them every day since I finished the book. This one is a must read. 5 stars.
The Feathered Bone by Jules Cantrell // This book is so so heavy and deals with so many tough topics. Suicide, depression, loss of a child, abuse, sex trafficking. It broke my heart. I had to put the book down in one particular part and just SOB. I don’t read Christian fiction often. I just don’t find it realistic. It was so nice to read a book that addresses real issues. Dark issues…without glossing them over. Overall this story is about HOPE. Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul. 5 stars
Bird Box by Josh Malerman // Creepy and suspensful and dystopian. This one gave me goosies the entire way through and had my heart pounding. It’s got a really unique premise and I can confidently say it will entertain you. 5 stars
What She Knew by Gilly Macmillan // This thriller kept me up late turning pages. Strangers aren’t the ones you need to worry about, it’s the people closest to you. I kind of got obsessed with this one and read it as fast as I could. I pretty much thought every single person in the book was guilty at one point or another. 4 stars
How to Be a Good Wife by Emma Chapman // I give this one a big fat EHHHHHH. It was pretty suspenseful throughout and the main character was really vividly written. BUT…I hated (haaaaaated) the ending. 2.5 stars
The Other Story by Tatiana DeRosnay // oh my Lord was this book a hot mess. HOW? Sarah’s Key was so good. And this was a disaster. It’s almost like she had a deadline to meet and just blurted out a bunch of crap so that she’d have something to publish. I did enjoy the Italian parts, but what on God’s green earth was up with the nonsensical cruise crash at the end? SO BAD // 1 star
On deck:
Italian for Beginners // LoveWaterMemory // Salt to the Sea // The Perfume Collector // The Rumor // The Guest Room // The Things We Keep // Wreck and Order // Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World // My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You I’m Sorry
Oh- also…
I asked for recommendations on my blog Facebook page and got SO MANY good titles. You can find that list HERE.
Have a beautiful day!

So glad to see you are reading so much again. I am reading Bird Box right now and am really enjoying it. I have also recently read The a Feathered Bone and What She Knew. I agree that both were very good reads. Not sure what is up next. Maybe a Stephen King book. There are several that I would like to read. Welcome back Stateside. Enjoy VA…..Ft Belvoir was our first duty station and we really loved it!

Besides _Salt to the Sea_, you need to read _Shades of Grey_ by Ruth Septys (same author). The two books are related… _Salt_ deals with Prussian/Polish and German issues and _Shades_ deals with Lithuanians and Soviets. The order you read them isn’t important though.

I agree. I was going to recommend them too. I would read Shades of Grey first. I think they’re technically YA novels and are fast reads. More WWII fiction based on real events.

I believe it is Between Shades of Grey – I was intrigued by the mention of Lithuania (lived there for about 9 months) so Googled the title. The author’s first name is Ruta.

I started to read The Guest Room and really….not my type of book! I’ll be anxious to read your review!

It still have Outlander on my side table that I’m trying to finish. I keep falling asleep lol. Not because it isn’t good – I’m obsessed with Jamie and Claire but it’s like riding in a car for me – 10 minutes in and I’m asleep. Just got Hissy Fit in the mail today. Looking forward to that one on my vacation.

I’ve loved everything Kate Morton has written but my favorite is The Secret Keeper. Just finished Amy Snow by Tracy Rees, it was good too. I want to read Lilac Girls next. Thanks for your recommendations. I’ll add some of those to my list!

Listening to the audio of Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter (its so good!) and reading Into The Wilderness by Sara Donati. Its kind of along the lines of the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon supposedly.
Finished The Obsession by Nora Roberts – definitely recommend. The book is getting passed around the office and so far 5 coworkers loved it.

I just recently discovered Karen Slaughter – good – gruesome – but good writing! I’m going to start Grant County books from the beginning.

I’ve just finished Shtum by Jem Lester, which wasn’t always an easy read and I’m now starting on The Reader on The 6.27 by Jean-Paul Didierlaurent (translated from French).

I just finished After You by Jojo Moyes & looooooooooooooooooooved it!!!I liked Me Before You but hated HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATED the ending & this was a great follow up/reconciliation for me with a great many stories about coming back from dark places in our lives.

I am presently reading My Grandmother Told Me to Tell You She’s sorry. Lots of light moments, but also lots of tears. I have to read it in small chunks. Have you read A Man Called Ove, by the same author? Excellent!!!

I love these posts – you’re right, it’s a virtual book club. I finished Twisted River by Siobhan MacDonald…kinda brain candy, but it kept me going. And then I tried to read The Big Short (haven’t seen the movie but my husband really liked it, and I love to read a book before I see a movie) – while it was super interesting, I just kept falling asleep! I listen to books in the car but lately haven’t had much time either alone in the car or longer than 20 minutes so it’s hard to get anything going. So speaking of books before movies, my husband watched 11/22/63 and I started, too….but that’s another book I never finished. Only King book I’ve not finished. So I stopped watching the series about halfway, where I stopped the book, and tried again for a third time to read it. Dude, it’s King, and it’s not that I don’t love it, I just keep getting bogged down. Ugh. And finally, I picked up Pillars of the Earth by Follett. I’ve never read it and it was some 25th anniversary edition. I think I’m going to love it. But I need to make more time to read. Even 15 minutes at a time add up….

I just read Summer Rental, by Mary Kay Andrews. I’m glad I read your reading post. I would recommend it, and plan on reading more of her books.
