It started like this (on Friday)…
And snowed all day and all night and all day the next day. At first it was magical and beautiful and soft.
But soon the soft snow became great, billowing gusts that caused the house to creak and the power to flicker off and on incessantly.
Snow was blowing sideways and up…it was crazy.
Snow covered the windows and we couldn’t see out.It was LOUD! I peeked out the front window and saw this:
It was actually all very fun and cozy until the power went out. Then it got cold pretty fast.
We all bundled up for the night and woke up to this:
I couldn’t open the doors to take photos because with no power we were trying desperately to keep things warm.
Our house has so many windows..it honestly got very cold very quickly. Luckily we have a master fire maker in the house.
The Howell girls spent the day like this:
The babies had to take a nap like this:
Have you ever tried to get two 2 year olds to keep hats on their heads? It’s a losing battle.
Meanwhile, J spent the day like this, bless his heart:
We had dinner by candlelight and witnessed one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.
I started to get really worried about the babies because it was so cold.
I prayed a little prayer, tucked the babies in, and went to the basement to find the Christmas footsies for the big girls.
And…just like that…the lights came on! We totally had a dance party. HA!
It was 40 degrees upstairs and it would have gotten so much colder. I was so grateful.
I woke up early the next morning (yesterday), put on my winter gear, and went out and took some photographs.
Pretty, huh?
We are still snowed in today. Roads are pretty bad and there’s no parking. Schools are closed so looks like it’s another pajama day.
I have to say that I am so so dang grateful that Jimmy was here for this. I mean…I know I can do anything myself, but it’s so nice to have him here.
He makes me feel safe. And that’s something I don’t ever want to take for granted.
And I have to tell you…now that we have electricity I’m really loving it.
I actually really loved it when the power was off (minus the being really cold part). We spent all day together with no electronic diversions and it was lovely.
And being in a cozy and warm home with beautiful snow outside? TOGETHER? That is the loveliest thing I can imagine.
Happy Monday!
See y’all soon. xoxo

Stephanie – I know exactly what you mean. My husband is gone Sunday – thursday for work every single week. Well most weeks.
And one Wednesday night he happened to be home and a tree fell on our car during a huge storm! I was so thankful he was home!!!
Yes, I would have handled things and we have great neighbors to help, but it was just a nice feeling knowing we could deal with it together.
And that he was out front, taking charge, helping the police with the person who actually drove their car into the tree after it fell on our car across the street.
It was just reassuring.
I am glad you were able to handle things together.
And glad you are all safe and sound with power though snowed in!
marianne b says
And he can shovel! We got 2 feet here on Long Island and thankfully didn’t lose power. Stay dry and warm! And whatever entry point your little ones will go in and out of, put down a bunch of old beach towels. It will save your sanity and your floors.

I miss the snow!!! Here in Nashville, we’re lucky if we get a dusting. I know that it can get tiresome, but I can’t think of anything more fun than being snowed in, jammies in front of a fireplace—-with the furnacet!!! Glad yours is back on!
diane says
I know exactly what you mean about feeling safe! My husband travels to other countries (not war zones thankfully!) but is gone part of every week. I know I can handle anything while he is away, but having him home does feel “safe” in a way I never feel when he’s gone. Hope your week is filled with “warm and safe” feelings and be careful in all that snow!
Leigh Erin says
Glad you got the power back! It get cold with snow on the roof and no power. Did you scrap at all!?

I did a couple pages for project life. YAY! did you get your goodies yet?!?!? xoxo

Looks like you guys weathered the snow beautifully! I’m in VA now, but grew up in Upstate NY and I miss the big snows. There is something about being outside while it snows, and going out into all that fresh snow that is wonderful. Enjoy it! (and the photo with the horse thing outside kind of cracks me up)
Heather says
You all are troopers! Glad it didn’t hit D.C./Northern VA at all. Beautiful pictures!!
Heather V says
Wow, you guys got hit hard! So happy you’re all okay, and that you have a fireplace! Here in Michigan, we got a little snow, some rain, and right now we have a lot of wind – as I look out the window, birds are trying to fly and are getting blown backwards and all around.
Your photos are beautiful, I really hope you share a layout about this if you decide to scrap it. I bet it’s something none of you will ever forget, and I’m glad you were able to spend the time together as a family, despite the cold.
kate sade says
sweetest… i’m so happy that you could ALL experience this together.. it will be such a beautiful memory..
Ashley Calder says
My goodness, that was a STORM you were hit with!
Glad you are all warm again!!
I think you should make the babies wear hats all of the time. It would be worth the effort, because they are just too cute.
Brenda says
So glad you have your power again and could all enjoy being together! Since I live in California I’m jealous of the snow!
clippergirl says
So glad to hear you’re all ok, you took some beautiful pics to capture it all…love the one with the sunset and the one with the twins in the crib with her hat on…priceless!
Jo says
Wow! Snow is beautiful and awesome but quite scary too. We don’t get any snow here…ever! And I kind of like that, but I think it would be lovely to spend a cozy day in with the family on a day like that.
Jennifer says
Awesome snapshots!! take great care of family.
Glad J there with you at this time to feel safe.

I LOVE all these beautiful photographs. I love that you have made all this craziness into a positive too! I love those non-electronic days too. We do this once a month and it’s AWESOME!
Love you girl…and you have been in my thoughts and prayers through this freaky storm! (((Hugs)))
Loves,

It’s always so beautiful after a snowstorm, like a crystal white blanket has been placed over the world, glistening and sparkly and serene. When I lived in snow country, it was always irritating though, that it would hardly ever do that for Christmas. Halloween? Oh, sure. Christmas? Forget about it. Boo.
So glad the power was restored in a (somewhat) timely manner. It is kind of fun making do … for a while … but 40 degrees in the house? NOT FUN. Glad you are all safe. And warm again. And together!
breanne says
beautiful photos, steph!!! you truly know what it’s like to experience the great northeast now!! the silhouette photo of the girls near the window is absolutely STUNNING.
Mariah says
Pretty Cool! Thanks goodness for fireplaces. We had a real cold snap a few years ago with negative temperatures and rolling black outs. It’s a neat adventure to add to the memories.
Kathy says
Driveway hint… back the cars on one side and leave the other clear. Then you clear the whole empty side and move the cars over to shovel the other side. My dh almost never shovels snow; he’s a first responder and I do the shoveling so he can get to work or get back into our drive. The neighbor husbands are jealous and ask when I will start doing their drives!
leslie rae says
Ok…those pictures are insane!!! I’m a Georgia girl and i just can’t even imagine that snow! Ice, yes, no power, yes, pine trees snapping like chopsticks, yes, but snow on a front porch like a beach?? love the images…thanks for sharing!
kara s. says
gosh girl!! this looks like something out of a christmas card. so jealous. TX is still bi-polar and hot/cold/hot/cold. 🙁
enjoy that snow and keep WARM!!!

Absolutely in love with this post. The photos of the twins just kill me. The hats while they nap?!?! LOVE IT

Oh my, that looks like so much fun! Your house is just adorable. I think I used to have your exact couch, I got mine at levitz and we liked it because we culd remove the covers and they washed without any damage.
Leigh Erin says
YES! You sweet girl and no PL yet! 🙁

I love these pictures, snow is so magical and beautiful after a big snowfall. So glad you made it thru ok and had your awesome hubby there to help. What a big shovel job that had to be for him, just wait till all 4 girls can help him do that one day. Having power back on is a blessing for sure!!

love reading this…brought back memories of when i was a child. winters were a lot more severe…i remember when i was about 4 and we had a blizzard, the wind was howling and the snow was drifting, but i was inside with my parents and brothers, safe. even though you are perfectly capable, i am glad that J was home with you an the girls! think i have a picture of the morning after and i am all bundled up with a kerchief on my head…should pull it out and scrapbook it!!!
Christine Campbell says
You don’t get weather like that in Texas or Georgia!! 🙂 It is beautiful and I’m glad you didn’t lose your power for long. Knock on wood, with both major storms we’ve had here, the power has only flickered. I definitely would have to leave if mine was off for more than a couple hours – being in a basement apt is cold even when the power is on…Pretty as it is, I am soooo ready for spring!!!
Natalie Stewart says
Wow! I live in Australia and have never seen ANYTHING like this. I can’t even imagine how cold it must have been. To be honest though I am very jealous. Your photos are just beautiful, I especially love the sunset.
Beth says
I’ve been busy this week so late commenting but I wanted to say
Welcome to Real Winter!LOL I’m born and bred and still living in
Canada so this storm wasn’t really much of a big deal for us but
I will be glad when winter is over.
I always think that the people who say they “love snow” don’t have
to live with several feet of it in their yard for months at a time!
And I have not been warm in October!LOL
Glad J was home to help with the shoveling and you captured some
beautiful photos!
