In August Italians take their holidays. They go to the beach for the most part. Businesses close down and homes are shuttered. They take it very seriously.
This weekend the exodus had already started and we were able to get out and go for a walk to explore our city…and we didn’t really have to share it with anyone!
It was slightly eerie / zombie apocolypse-esque but really perfect for photos.
I thought I’d share our typical neighborhood walk with y’all. We take this walk most weekends…we LOVE getting out and experiencing our city. We often stop for vegetables and fruit, a full liter at the milk machine, bread, coffee, and spritz aperol. Gelato is mandatory!
All photos are in order from when we walk out our door and as the walk progresses.
Enjoy!

So fun! What a lovely walk. I am not surprised you said it still feels like a vacation (was that on Instagram?)after 2 years. I felt that way the entire time I was there and that was only 3 months. I’m glad the feeling doesn’t go away. 🙂
Have a great, quiet August! Does that mean that the girls don’t go back to school until September? But they were out “late”, weren’t they? Late June-ish? Anyway, yay for summer!!
Love, Fontaine

Wow beautiful and really no one in the streets like you said!!! SO maybe a silly question…would it be better not to take a vacation in August there since most things are closed? Hoping in two years time to make Italy part of a trip to celebrate our 25th anniversary:)

I wonder if sunlight ever reaches inside some of those windows. It is amazing that folks want to vacation at the same time as every one else. But I know it is tradition that rules in that part of the world. Such insight into another part of the world. Fascinating. My son leaves soon to spend two years in Germany. He will be studying in graduate school. He has already seen most parts of Germany from a previous stay and I am hoping he branches out to more of Europe. Our children are global citizens now. And I wonder what the long term impact your trip will have on your kids and the choices they will make in the future. Your current unborn child will perhaps spend their youth in the states (?) instead. It will be fascinating to see how everything works out over the next many years.

Thank you for sharing those photos. They are beautiful.
They remind me of my years in Italy. Yes, I remember the cities are empty in August. We always used to visit Rome in August. (Ferragosto is the 15th. Everybody goes on holiday then)
I’m glad you are enjoying your time in Italy so much. It is a unique way to live and good for your daughters to experience this.
greetings from (very hot) Spain,
Lisca

I’m sure you and your hubby have discussed the dramatic change in buildings here in the states. Your children, perhaps, are going to be disappointed in our “blah” architecture back here when you all come home!!

Your photos are so wonderfully framed; I LOVE seeing them! I’ve never been to Italy but have always wanted to go. Maybe someday! “Magical” is always the word that comes to mind when I look through your photos. Thank you for sharing them!

Beautiful! Seeing your pics is making me very excited about our 2 weeks although it is still 60 sleeps away so trying not to think about it too much and wish my summer away.
Is early oct a big tourist season? Hope not!
