One of the items on our Spring Break Bucket list was “Maine”.
We had originally planned to spend the night in Portland and do some exploring. But for budgeting reasons we decided (at the last minute) that a day trip would be smarter.
I spent a week in Kennebunkport when i was a young adult and I’ve thought about it ever since.
That was my first taste of New England and my first bite of a lobster roll.
Kennebunkport has always had a special place in my heart.
When we realized that we could make it there in less than 3 hours, we decided to go for it.
We basically drove all the way to Maine for a lobster roll.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Getting ready for a spur-of-the-moment road trip is not fun in our house.
It isn’t a sparkly, adventurous, bluebirds-from-snow-white type of thing.
But it’s totally worth it.
We hit the road at about 9:30.
On the way to Maine we drove through Boston. My heart sank and my eyes were teary. I am so angry and so sad about what happened.
So I pray. And try to outshine the dark with my light. It’s all I can do.
Before we knew it (okay, that’s a lie. the trip was full of “are whe there yets”, whining, potty breaks, and lucy repeatedly making me fetch her stuffed animal) we were there.
It’s just as beautiful as I remember it.
We had to drive by The Colony. That’s where I stayed last time I visited. SO pretty.
But we were on a mission. We went to find our lobster roll.
Mission accomplished! Chowdah and lobster rolls located.
SO GOOD. It is 7:30 in the morning as I write this and my mouth is watering. I’d totally have a lobster roll for breakfast.
Afterwards it was a quick stop at the windy, cold beach where these three crazies dipped their toes in the water.
And we had to stop by The Wedding Cake House for BB. It’s her favorite.
Our last stop was at The Candy Man. You can’t go to Maine and not eat lobster. And you certainly can’t go to Maine without getting saltwater taffy.
And we headed back home.
On the way back through Boston I snapped this photo of The Greater Boston Food Bank.
Hope you are having a wonderful week. Today I think we are going to go to the Roger Williams Park Zoo.
Love to you all-
xo

LOVE Roger Williams Park Zoo! My grandfather loved zoos and we went to pretty much every zoo in New England. But RW was always my favorite.

Oh! Lucky you! So glad you enjoyed it. I love the coast of Maine. Lobster rolls + chowder = bliss! I have been going there at least once a year forever… It’s one of my favorite places in the world. We have a special saying when we are there : There is no law that says you cannot eat lobster twice in the same day!

I live in Saco, about 20 minutes away from Kennebunk!! Glad you got to enjoy your day! We moved here 4 years ago from the Midwest and I can honestly say we don’t get tired of the lobster!!! I love day trips!!!:)

OMgoodness, thank you so much for this wonderful post!! My husband and I were married 16 years ago and spent our honeymoon in a bed and breakfast along the coast in Kennebunkport, Maine. I have pictures of all of the places you showed packed away somewhere…how wonderful to see your photos. If I close my eyes, I can remember it like it was yesterday!
If you ever get a chance to go in the fall (I recommend the first week in October) it is absolutely gorgeous. The changing of the leaves is just beautiful…your girls would love it. You could take them along the beach to collect all the purple shells that are on the shore. I still have the bottle of shells that my husband and I collected 16 years later. It has been displayed in my house for all that time.
Thank you so much for sharing…I really needed a reminder of that time in my life. Your post made me smile so much!!

I totally remember my trip to Maine! What is it about that place?!?! The Wedding Cake House is so cool – at the time I was decorating wedding cakes, so it had a special memory attached {in fact, when I scrapbooked this house, I added a little “photo strip” of cakes I had decorated that year. I love that page! lol.}

I hope you realize that driving all the way to Maine for a lobster roll makes you a true Rhode Islander. My mom, aunt & sister (master RI-based daytrippers– actually they go for “wandahs”, as in, “What daya wanna do? How bout go for a wandah?” and then they end up in Canada) would be so proud of you.
Christine Campbell says
Oh, only a few more hours and you would have been in my neck of the woods. π
Glad you had a great day though!!
